Dr. Gráinne Ahern is an experienced General Practitioner with a strong focus on women’s health and preventative medicine. She currently practices at Knocknacarra Family Care in Galway, where she has played a key role in developing chronic disease management programmes and delivering community health initiatives, including flu and COVID-19 vaccination clinics.
Dr. Gráinne Ahern graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB, BCh, BAO), achieving honours across all years of study, including First Class Honours in Psychiatry, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology. She also holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with First Class Honours from Trinity College Dublin, reflecting a strong academic foundation and multidisciplinary expertise.
Following her internship at Galway University Hospital, Dr. Gráinne Ahern completed extensive hospital rotations in general medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, and obstetrics, before progressing into general practice training roles in Galway. She is a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP).
Her clinical interests include women’s health, contraception, dermatology, and chronic disease management. She holds advanced certification in Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) and a Certificate of Dermoscopy from the Skin Cancer College Australia. She is also involved in professional development as a LARC tutor trainee and serves on the panel of Special Visitors for the Decision Support Service.
Dr. Gráinne Ahern has received several prestigious awards, including the John F Cunningham Medal and the Kieran O’Driscoll Gold Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, recognising her excellence in clinical training.
She is committed to delivering patient-centred care, with an emphasis on prevention, early diagnosis, and empowering patients to take an active role in their health.
