About Dr Grainne
Dr. Gráinne Ahern is an experienced General Practitioner with specialist-level expertise in women's health, contraception and dermatology — combining the accessibility of a family GP with the depth of a clinician who has dedicated significant postgraduate training to her areas of interest. She graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB, BCh, BAO), achieving First Class Honours in Psychiatry, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology. She also holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with First Class Honours from Trinity College Dublin — an unusual combination that reflects both academic breadth and a deep understanding of patient rights and healthcare ethics. Following her internship at Galway University Hospital, Dr. Ahern completed hospital rotations in general medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry and obstetrics, before specialising in general practice. She is a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) and currently also practices at Knocknacarra Family Care in Galway, where she has led chronic disease management programmes and community vaccination clinics. Her advanced certifications set her apart within general practice. She holds advanced certification in Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) and serves as a LARC tutor trainee — meaning she not only places these devices but trains other clinicians to do so. She also holds a Certificate of Dermoscopy from the Skin Cancer College Australia, allowing her to assess skin lesions with the same diagnostic tools used by dermatologists. Dr. Ahern serves on the panel of Special Visitors for the Decision Support Service and has received the John F. Cunningham Medal and the Kieran O'Driscoll Gold Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for excellence in clinical training.
