Hereditary haemochromatosis causes the body to absorb too much iron, which builds up over years and can damage the liver, heart and pancreas. Ireland has among the highest carrier rates in the world. This test screens the three HFE mutations most often responsible, from a saliva sample you collect at home. Your results are delivered to you directly by Randox. Why does this matter particularly in Ireland?
Hereditary haemochromatosis is more common in people of Irish descent than almost anywhere else, and it is treatable — which is why knowing your carrier status is useful.
How is the sample collected?
With a saliva swab. There is no blood sample and no needle — full instructions are included in the kit.
Does a genetic result mean I have the condition?
No. Genetic testing tells you whether you carry particular risk markers, not whether you have or will develop the condition. It is a risk indicator, not a diagnosis.
