Prescriptions in Romania — What You Need to Know
Romania uses an electronic prescription system (SIPE — Sistemul Informatic de Prescripție Electronică). When your doctor issues a prescription through SIPE, you receive it electronically and present it at any pharmacy in Romania.
For patients without Romanian public health insurance, prescriptions are dispensed at full private cost. For patients with Romanian public health insurance (asigurare de sănătate), reimbursed medications are dispensed with the applicable co-payment — though reimbursement applies only to prescriptions issued by doctors contracted with the public system. Private prescriptions issued through Global Health are dispensed at full private cost regardless of insurance status.
For foreign citizens without a Romanian CNP, your passport number is used on the prescription — this is fully accepted at Romanian pharmacies for private prescriptions.
