Why Medical Support Makes the Difference
Tobacco dependence activates the same reward circuits in the brain as other dependencies. Trying to stop through willpower alone ignores the biological basis of addiction — and this is why it fails in most cases.
Structured medical support acts on several levels simultaneously:
- Dependence assessment — not all smokers have the same dependence profile. The most appropriate intervention depends on how many cigarettes you smoke, when you smoke your first of the day, how you have responded to previous attempts, and what other health conditions you have
- Tailored pharmacological support — where clinically indicated, your GP can assess pharmacological support options, at the doctor's professional discretion following full clinical assessment
- Behavioural support — identifying the triggers that lead to smoking and developing alternative strategies is part of the plan
- Follow-up — regular follow-up during the cessation process significantly improves success rates
Who This Service Is For
This consultation is appropriate for adults who:
- Currently smoke and want to stop with structured medical support
- Have tried to stop before without success and want to explore approaches with stronger scientific evidence
- Want to understand what pharmacological support options exist and whether they are candidates for them, following full clinical assessment
- Have health conditions — cardiovascular disease, diabetes, COPD, planned pregnancy — where stopping smoking is an urgent clinical priority
- Want smoking cessation support in English or Portuguese without language barriers
What Your Consultation Includes
Dependence assessment
Your GP assesses your tobacco dependence profile — including how many cigarettes you smoke per day, when you smoke your first of the day, how you feel when you cannot smoke, and how you have responded to previous attempts to stop. This assessment structures the most appropriate support plan for your specific profile.
Motivation assessment
Motivation is a clinically relevant factor in smoking cessation. Your GP explores your reasons for wanting to stop, the barriers you anticipate, and how to structure the plan to maximise your chances of success.
Personalised cessation plan
Based on the assessment, your GP designs a structured plan — which may include behavioural strategies to manage triggers and withdrawal symptoms, basic nutritional support to manage potential weight gain when stopping, and physical activity recommendations as a support tool.
Assessment of pharmacological support options — at the doctor's discretion
Where clinically indicated following full clinical profile assessment, your GP can assess pharmacological support options for smoking cessation. No pharmacological option can be confirmed or issued before the clinical assessment.
Note: Since June 2024, the Spanish Ministry of Health funds certain medications for smoking cessation support for patients who meet specific clinical criteria — including smokers with high dependence as assessed by the Fagerström test. Your GP informs you during the consultation whether you may meet the funding criteria and what steps to follow to access it through the public system.
Clinical documentation — at the doctor's professional discretion
When clinically indicated, your GP issues appropriate clinical documentation valid at any pharmacy in Spain.
Follow-up
Stopping smoking is a process — not a single event. Follow-up consultations are available to monitor progress, manage the highest-risk moments for relapse, and adjust the plan if needed.
Stopping Smoking and Your Health — Why Now
The health benefits of stopping smoking begin within hours and accumulate over years:
- 20 minutes — blood pressure and heart rate normalise
- 12 hours — carbon monoxide in the blood returns to normal levels
- 2 weeks to 3 months — circulation and lung function improve
- 1 year — the risk of coronary heart disease is halved
- 5 years — the risk of stroke equals that of a non-smoker
- 10 years — the risk of lung cancer is halved
For smokers with cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, COPD, or who are planning a pregnancy, stopping smoking is one of the clinical interventions with the greatest impact on long-term health outcomes — frequently greater than any medication.
Smoking Cessation in Spain — Context
Spain has one of the highest smoking rates in Western Europe — approximately 22-23% of the adult population smokes daily. Access to structured smoking cessation programmes in the public system varies by autonomous community. For international residents who prefer support in English or Portuguese, structured options are practically non-existent outside major cities.
Our service provides structured medical smoking cessation assessment — same day, from anywhere in Spain — with follow-up available throughout the process.
