Who this service is for
The teleconsultation for prescription renewal is indicated for adults who:
- Use continuous medication for stable and well-controlled chronic conditions — hypertension, type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, dyslipidemia, gastroesophageal reflux, stable anxiety, depression in remission, among others
- Need to renew a continuous-use prescription and have no symptoms of decompensation
- Were prescribed the medication by another doctor and need continuity of treatment
- Are traveling or living temporarily in another state and do not have access to their usual doctor
- Are foreigners or expats in Brazil and need continuity of treatment prescribed in another country — evaluated and adapted to the Brazilian system
This consultation is indicated for stable and well-controlled patients. If you have new symptoms, worsening of the condition, or suspicion of decompensation, schedule a general clinical consultation for a full evaluation.
What is included in the consultation
Assessment of current treatment
The doctor reviews your current medication — doses, frequency, length of use, response to treatment, side effects, and relevant medication interactions. Even though this is a renewal consultation, it is a real clinical assessment — not a formality.
Electronic prescription — at the physician's discretion
When clinically indicated after a full evaluation, the doctor issues an electronic prescription with ICP-Brasil digital signature, valid at pharmacies throughout Brazil. You receive the document digitally on the same day.
Request for monitoring tests — when indicated
For chronic conditions that require laboratory monitoring — diabetes, hypothyroidism, dyslipidemia, use of anticoagulants — the doctor may request monitoring tests to follow the treatment.
Clinical guidance
The doctor assesses whether the current treatment remains the most appropriate for your case and provides guidance on any necessary adjustment — including when to refer to a specialist where indicated.
Medications that can be renewed by teleconsultation
Simple prescription medications (white prescription)
The vast majority of continuous-use medications can be renewed by teleconsultation:
- Antihypertensives — losartan, enalapril, amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide and others
- Oral antidiabetics — metformin, glibenclamide, sitagliptin and others
- Levothyroxine — for hypothyroidism
- Statins — simvastatin, atorvastatin and others for dyslipidemia
- Proton pump inhibitors — omeprazole, pantoprazole for reflux
- Antidepressants — fluoxetine, sertraline, escitalopram and others in stable patients
- Non-controlled anxiolytics — buspirone and others
- Oral contraceptives — assessment and renewal
- Other continuous-use simple prescription medications
Special control medications (blue prescription)
Benzodiazepines — such as clonazepam, alprazolam and diazepam — and other psychotropic medications are special control medications in Brazil. The blue prescription has specific prescribing requirements. The doctor will inform you during the consultation whether electronic issuance is possible for your specific case and what applicable limitations there are.
Medications that CANNOT be renewed by teleconsultation
- Narcotics (yellow prescription) — morphine, codeine and others — cannot be prescribed electronically under Brazilian law
- Medications that require mandatory in-person evaluation — the doctor will inform you when this is the case
The decision to renew or not renew the prescription is always at the physician's discretion after a full clinical evaluation. No renewal can be guaranteed before the consultation.
Continuity of treatment prescribed abroad
For foreigners and expats in Brazil, one of the biggest challenges is continuing a treatment that was prescribed in another country — with medications that may have different brand names, dosages in different units, or different generic equivalents in the Brazilian market.
In this consultation, the doctor:
- Reviews the treatment prescribed abroad — assessing the original medication, dosage and clinical indication
- Identifies the equivalent available in Brazil — same active ingredient, equivalent dosage, available in Brazilian pharmacies
- Issues an electronic prescription valid in Brazil — when clinically indicated after a full evaluation
- Provides guidance on availability and where to find the medication in Brazil
Some medications available in other countries are not registered with ANVISA and are not available in Brazil. The doctor provides guidance on the available alternatives when this is the case.
