The human heart is one of the most fascinating and essential organs in the body. It works around the clock to keep us alive—pumping blood, delivering oxygen, and removing waste from our tissues. But how does this powerful muscle really function?
At Global Health, we believe that understanding your body is the first step toward taking better care of it. That’s why we’re sharing a clear and engaging explanation of how the heart works—along with a helpful video for visual learners.
🫀 The Heart: Your Body’s Natural Pump
Your heart is a muscular organ, roughly the size of your fist, located slightly to the left of the center of your chest. It functions as a pump, circulating blood through your entire body.
It has four chambers:
Two atria (upper chambers) – receive blood
Two ventricles (lower chambers) – pump blood out
The right side of the heart collects oxygen-poor blood from the body and sends it to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen. The left side receives this oxygen-rich blood and pumps it to the rest of the body. This cycle happens continuously, usually 60–100 times per minute, every minute of your life.
🩸 Why Blood Circulation Matters
The heart's pumping action is crucial for:
Delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells
Removing carbon dioxide and waste
Helping regulate body temperature
Transporting hormones and immune cells
When the heart doesn’t work properly, it can lead to fatigue, chest pain, dizziness, and serious health conditions like heart failure or arrhythmias.
